Cold and flu season is on the way, and there’s no better time to pack in extra vitamins the natural way. Fresh juice is not only nutritious—it’s also a fun little kitchen “experiment” that kids adore. If you have a juicer (or even a manual citrus squeezer), this activity is perfect for a cosy afternoon together.
Below is our favourite immune‑boosting combo: oranges, carrots, pineapple, and ginger. Simple, bright, delicious—and full of child‑friendly health benefits.
Sweet, Juicy Oranges
Oranges are loaded with essential vitamins and minerals that support your child’s growth and overall health. Their high Vitamin C content helps the body absorb iron more effectively—important for maintaining healthy hemoglobin levels and preventing fatigue associated with anemia.
Crunchy, Immune‑Boosting Carrots
Carrots are rich in antioxidants, most notably beta‑carotene, which gives them their beautiful orange colour. During digestion, beta‑carotene converts to Vitamin A, a key nutrient that supports a strong immune system. Vitamin A also helps keep the skin and the lining of the airways, digestive tract, and urinary tract healthy—the body’s first line of defense against harmful germs.
Sweet Pineapple
Pineapple brings a tropical sweetness and a powerful nutritional punch. It’s an excellent source of Vitamin C and contains nutrients like Vitamin B1, folic acid, manganese, and fibre. Pineapple also has natural anti‑inflammatory properties and supports healthy digestion, thanks to the enzyme bromelain.
A Touch of Ginger
Ginger is a natural immune hero—well known for its antifungal and antiviral benefits. It supports digestion, helps ease nausea, and offers relief from cold and flu symptoms. Its warming properties can also assist with respiratory discomfort such as coughs, congestion, and sore throats.
Making the Juice: A Fun Sensory Activity
1. Start With Washing the Produce
Kids love water play, and rinsing fruit and vegetables is a fantastic way to get them involved. This simple task encourages bilateral integration—using both sides of the body together—which is foundational for later skills like reading and writing.
2. Halve the Oranges
Cutting open the oranges releases a burst of fresh citrus scent, stimulating your child’s olfactory sense. Handling the textured peel and soft fruit provides rich tactile input, which is wonderful for sensory development.
3. Squeezing the Oranges
Whether using hands or a juicer, squeezing oranges requires strength and coordination. The press‑and‑twist movement helps develop fine motor skills.
4. Feeding the Juicer
This is always the highlight for little ones! Watching fruits and veggies turn into juice feels almost magical. They’ll beam with pride knowing they helped make something themselves.
Mix, Portion, and Freeze
Once all your ingredients are juiced:
- Mix everything together for a bright, refreshing immune‑boosting drink.
- Decant into 100 ml portions (or any size that works for your family).
- Freeze the portions for easy, grab‑and‑go convenience.
- When needed, simply thaw, shake well, and serve!
On hot days, your little ones might even enjoy their juice slightly slushy—cool, refreshing, and still packed with goodness.
Make It Your Own
Feel free to swap ingredients based on what’s in season or what your kids prefer. Apples, pears, spinach, beetroot—the possibilities are endless.
Most importantly… have fun!
Healthy habits start with joyful experiences in the kitchen.
